Early spring beauties: Hellebores (Lenten Roses)

Yes, I have daffodils blooming now, April 1, 2024 (lovely), but the flowers I am most enjoying are the hellebores…otherwise known as Lenten Roses. These plants are native to Europe and Asia, where they prosper in woodlands as well as open spaces including meadows. Their ability to tolerate shade, even very dry shade (such as I have near Norway Maples), and their early and longlasting bloom are what attracted me to them. While these plants can be grown from seed, it may take many years for them to flower (I’ve heard 5-10), so I prefer to purchase mature plants. Below is a photo from May 9, 2018 – note how the white hellebore flowers (“Wedding Bells”) remain fresh and beautiful for at least a month. I’ve had these plants in place for many years without watering or fertilizer other than leaf mulch and occasional handfuls of compost.
